What is Base64 and why do you need a decoder?
Base64 is an encoding scheme that converts binary or text data into a printable ASCII string using 64 characters. You'll encounter it everywhere: in JWT tokens, email attachments (MIME), HTTP Authorization headers, data URIs for images, and API responses.
A Base64 decode online tool saves you from running a command in the terminal or writing a quick script every time you need to read an encoded value. Paste the string, click decode, and see the original text immediately.
What this online Base64 tool does
- Decode Base64 to text — convert any standard Base64 string to UTF-8
- Encode text to Base64 — turn any string into a valid Base64 representation
- Encode files to Base64 — upload a local file and get its Base64 output for use in data URIs or API payloads
- Error detection — flags malformed or non-UTF-8 input with a clear message
- Copy output — one-click clipboard copy
Common Base64 decoding scenarios for developers
- Reading the payload of a JWT token (each segment is Base64URL encoded)
- Decoding an HTTP Basic Auth header (
Authorization: Basic ...) - Inspecting a Base64-encoded email attachment or MIME part
- Converting an image or small file to a Base64 data URI for use in HTML or CSS
- Debugging a webhook or API payload that encodes binary data
Base64 vs Base64URL — what's the difference?
Standard Base64 uses + and / characters, while Base64URL replaces them with - and _ to make encoded strings safe for use in URLs and JSON. JWTs use Base64URL for all three segments. This decoder handles both variants automatically.
Why use a browser-based decoder?
Many Base64 strings contain sensitive data: authentication tokens, API credentials embedded in configs, or private keys. A browser-based decoder that runs entirely in JavaScript ensures that string never leaves your machine. DataForge does not log, store, or transmit the data you paste.

Base64 often wraps JSON or JWT data. Use the JSON formatter to prettify the decoded output, or the JWT decoder for full token inspection.
